Mystic Allegiance

Welcome to Mystic Allegiance! It’s a small store that sells various things that relate to spirituality, most non-Christian religions, faeries, etc. etc. They also have psychic readings and tarot card readings by their resident psychic, Julian (AKA Sara’s boyfriend).

More on Comic Drawing…

It was fun drawing this comic even though it’s very hard for me to do establishing shots. I often wonder if I should do more of those, especially establishing shots from further away than you see here. Like, a shot of the street with lots of other people walking around. I love drawing characters and faces so much. I rarely would draw anything else as a teen. That has made it a struggle to plan out big scenes. I also have trouble with movement and body positions. I can draw them pretty well from life or looking at pictures, but I am trying to take as much out of my head as possible for this comic. I’m practicing a lot, so hopefully I will get a lot better at the things I’m not happy with.

Graphic Novels and Inspiration

I have a bunch of ideas for graphic novels I want to write/draw in the future, so I hope Petunia will help me grow into my ideal style. Big inspirations for me are Eddie Campbell (you might be able to tell), Hideki Mori, and Jeff Lemire. I also have learned a lot from Scott McCloud. My awesome brother and sister-in-law got me a couple of his books about making comics, and they are very helpful. If you have any interest in drawing comics, I would highly suggest Making Comics and Understanding Comics. I have also gotten some recommendations from other comic artist friends, but have yet to check that stuff out yet. I’ll be sure to tell you about it after I experience it.

I hope you like this page of Paranormal Petunia. I’m excited to show you what happens next. Thank you to everyone who has been reading. It means a lot!

Not expecting a new comic today? Well good news, I am planning on publishing two new pages a week for the time being. I will be shooting for Tuesday and Sunday. I have had so many idea about this story, with new plot points coming every day. Maybe it’s something in the water I am drinking, but Petunia’s story is really coming to life for me now. I keep having revelations about the ending of the story. I’m glad the pace is so slow in actually putting it down on paper, because it gives me a lot of time to think.

You may have noticed that Petunia’s character design, and sometimes the art style of the whole comic, has changed a bit. I feel weird about it, but I have been experimenting and trying to grow into a style that I can stick with through the end of the comic. It’s probably way more noticeable for me because I spend so much time on these drawings. It reminds me of how I used to read Garfield and the first Garfield drawings were so different from the rest of the comic. In the early days, Garfield was extremely large and had a much different face. Maybe that’s what’s happening for me. I have to find my Garfield in Petunia.

Anyway, I like the Petunia design we see here on this page and the previous page. I think it suits her personality and I definitely like it. You may also have noticed the occasional panels that feature more realistic drawings. Others are more stylized. I’ve always enjoyed that in comics and cartoons. For me, it gives depth and makes the world seem very real without sacrificing the stylized look of other panels. I also think it provides a sharp contrast which will hopefully add to the story. I am excited to use this technique much later when things get a little creepier.

Some thoughts about this character, Sara. She’s definitely inspired by some of my own clients and people I have met. I decided earlier today that she works as one of those jewelry salespeople who host jewelry parties. Weirdly, she doesn’t wear a lot of jewelry herself. She’s a very good salesperson, as you can see here with the pressure she’s putting on Petunia to work for her. The job is definitely outside of Petunia’s normal scope. She doesn’t work with psychics and she’s not a psychic herself. Sara found Petunia online and assumed she could do what her boyfriend does, or at least something similar.

By the way, the world Petunia lives in is not familiar with paranormal stuff. I hope you gathered that after reading her exchange with Lewis and Myra. Petunia is definitely an odd duck in her community because most people don’t believe in this kind of thing. I mean, you would probably roll your eyes if you saw an ad for a Paranormal Private Eye in your town. However, it might be the first place you’d call if something paranormal started happening to you. These are the people Petunia deals with every day. Sara is different though… perhaps desperate for answers and willing to call anyone? I guess we’ll see what happens.

Not really what I do…

Hi guys! I’m back from my self-inflicted winter break and I have to say I’m pretty glad to be drawing Paranormal Petunia again. While I was away I finished the first printed issue of Paranormal Petunia, which will be available very soon. So I’m very excited about that!

I’m also going to try posting Petunia two times a week. Maybe Tuesday and Saturday? Does that sound okay? I would start doing that next week if I can keep up with the drawing and my other projects. I’m a busy dude! Anyway, I was inspired by my good friend and artist/author, Pat Nietupski (AKA Floyd Fox), who does the new fantasy/adventure comic Legends of Fomora and the tried and true geeky jokester comic Unnatural 20. We were hanging out last night looking through each others Magic the Gathering cards and he was talking about how excited he is about drawing and posting comics. It was super inspiring and has rekindled some of my love of this stuff. It’s easy to just feel like you HAVE to post this stuff and forget that you’re doing it because you love it. And I do love it! I can’t wait to show you what happens to Petunia.

On that subject, I also took this winter break to take some time and think about where this story is going. I had a lot of plans for it already, but I really wanted to know how the story would end (more or less) and also think about Petunia as a character. I am happy to say I now have a TON of new plot points and have pretty much figured out the whole thing.

I’d like to say that Paranormal Petunia is going to quickly become a lot more intense soon. I feel like the first section of the story was fairly low-key. I was trying to introduce the setting and characters without rushing into the heavy stuff. Rest assured, you can plan on seeing some serious paranormal stuff happening very soon. There will be emotions, darker themes, and a lot more.

About this page… this is not just a goof. This will be going somewhere. A cheating boyfriend? Petunia isn’t a relationship counselor… This client knows that right? Also, Yerba. Petunia doesn’t like Yerba. It was nice anyway, Sara.

Let me know if you have any thoughts about the story. I’d love to hear what you think.

Are you Petunia Vanderhoof?

To be continued…

Petunia will be taking a short break and will start again early in 2015! Please check back. I shoot for Thursday updates as much as possible 🙂 – CC
